Mirthologica wants Athens, but I will wait for her to claim it. Once we have around 4 people I would say, we can begin. Of course, anyone can cover some background info on their city if they would like.

Let the Roleplay begin!

Post by Automans on Sun May 22, 2016 10:46 am

Demokritos stood watching the city from his home on Acrocorinth. This morning he was in a good mood, his alliance offer had just been sent to Sparta. An envoy had even been sent to Amyntas of Macedon. They could use some wealth, and Corinth could use their power to defeat Athens if war ever came. They had historically been friends, after all, Corinth had been the wealthiest city in Greece for centuries. This was due to it being the strongest trade power in the area. They controlled the Isthmus, and had invented the trireme. Those dratted Athenians had stolen their prized work. The air was clear, and the smells and sights of the new city were visible to him. He loved this city. It was his city. He had just been elected as the new monarch by the Council and his ambitions could not be controlled by the council. The sky was cloudless, and a brusque wind was quite common near Acrocorinth. Demokritos had work to do. As a newly elected monarch, he had many responsibilities. Next week he would be visiting his colonies at Syracuse and Corcyra. Popular as he was, Demokritos needed something for the people to be proud of. The idea had come to him in a dream. Preparations had already begun for the Isthmian Games. The chariot stadium was under construction and more ideas were being accepted into the preparations. Envoys had been sent out to other city states with invitations to next years games. In his early 20s, Demokritos had a long life ahead of him. He hoped to use it well. Wrapped in the folds of his toga were the plans for a new temple to the gods. It would be grander that anything ever built before, and would show the power of Corinth.

Athens is a booming city-state that is both culturally vibrant and the epicenter of democracy. Theater, art, music are extremely popular, as well as philosophical debates in the market square. Rich, successful, and a major hub of Greek culture, Athens is certainly prospering. Athens allows women to own property, businesses, and divorce in civil court. The goddess of the city state is Athena, and her temple is a major cultural landmark throughout Greece.

Athena had a vision for Athens. A young infant by the name of Pereclese was destined to be born. He was to be the leader of the great city-state. Athena arranged for fate to take its course. A happy couple was matched, and the wife soon pregnant. Athens eagerly awaited for its chosen leader to mature.

Tensions between Lesbos and Persia had been rising for some time now, leading to the many uprisings against the Tyrant Miletus. The people were getting tired of not having a say in how their live. s were run. However, the island did not have a large or powerful army, nor did they have to funds to build one, so maybe they would have to join the Delian League alongside Athens after all. Inhabitants of the area would entertain themselves by reading the poems of Sappho and attending plays. What they lacked in power they made up for in culture. Overall though, the islanders were generally not too concerned with what was happening outside of their world

Athens continues to build up its naval prowess. The current leader, Hippas, is widely criticized and rumors are flying about a rebellion. Many scholars want to start an official democracy, where every citizen gets a fair say in the governing process. In order for that to happen, however, Hippas must fall and Pericles must lead Athens into the Golden Age.

Lesbos sent their delegate, Basilius, over to Athens to confirm their alliance. This would be good for the island and they would one day repay Athens for protecting them from Persia. Hopefully. At the time, they would at least send ships and contribute to the navy. Bailius knew he could get Athens on his side- the fate of his city depended on it.

Upon the arrival of Basilus, Athens threw a major festival in honor of their close alliance. No expense was spared (for Athenians love an excuse to celebrate). The Acropolis was alive with all the cultural amenities of Athens. Fine food, drink, and entertainment were provided and the citizens frolicked in the rich cultural landscape of the great city-state. Naturally Athens would use their superior military and navy to defend Lesbos against Persia and other enemies, and not just because Sappho was very popular in Athens.

The leader of Olympia walked throughout his city. Everything was running smoothly and excitement was bubbling as the Olympic games were within sight. It was a tradition to host the games every four years, and it was the new leader's first time hosting. He was a bit stressed, but nonetheless made his way to the Temple of Zeus. The large gold and ivory statue that stood close by the temple could be seen for miles and he took great pride in having it in his city. While all the other cities were busy building up their military, Olympia chose to remain peaceful and not dabble too much in the art of warfare. The new leader knew this, and he chose to keep, for the most part, out of foreign affairs. His main goal was to avoid at all costs any impending invasions as powers began to rise around his city. He finally arrived at the temple and headed inside.

Basilius was unusually happy, and it wasn't just due to the excessive amount of wine at the festival. He had secured the deal and now Lesbos and Athens were in an alliance. He fell asleep humming some tune as lyres played in the background. He'd have to get back to his home after all and traveling the 462 kilometers wasn't easy. He would keep in contact with his new ally though. Communication was necessary.

Persia

Post by Automans on Tue May 24, 2016 9:11 pm

Darius stepped inside of his command tent. They would be entering Sardis tomorrow and he preparations to make. Aristagoras had launched the Ionian rebellion in 499 BCE. In a single year, they had captured Sardis and burned the city. Darius decided to quell the rebellion once and for all. His generals had spent the last several weeks deciding their battle order.  The Persian fleet of 600 ships had defeated the Ionians at the Battle of Lades. The Samians and Lesbians had deserted the naval battle at the site of the battle. The remaining ships were cut to pieces. Now all that stood before them were the Milesians. They were the last holdout of the Ionian rebellion. They stood barricaded inside their castle walls, but Darius knew that they could not hold out for long. They would arrive at the city in a weeks march. And then, the city would be destroyed. The Athenians had defeated them together with the Carians at Padasus, but Darius had summoned a massive army to destroy the city. Greece had been a nasty thorn in his side, and he resolved to attack them after he had finished off the Milesians. After the Milesians would fall, only Lesbos and Sammos stood in their way. Then they would sail on their fleet and invade Greece. More detailed plans would have to be created later, but Darius had a rough vision of his campaign. He would not be able to go to Greece, in order to return to Persia for administrative reasons. He would send Datis, his Western Commander.

Still slightly tipsy from the wine and humming with happiness from the Fest's success, Hippas knew that it was time to focus. With Datis poised to invade Greece, he knew that it would be stand together or die alone for the many city states. With a quick prayer to Athena, he sent out his riders. To Thebes, Lesbos, Delphi, Sparta, Olympia, and even to Corinth they rode. Athens would be proud to lead a coalition of armies from all the city states. After all, it was their best chance and keeping out the invaders. With a superior naval force and Athena's blessing, Hippas prayed that Greece would not fall.

Maggie, quick note. At the battle of Marathon, the Spartans were having a religious festival. Of course, you can abandon the battle and join the Athenians in fending off the Persians.
